Univa Grid Engine Benchmark Technical Brief


Distributed Resource Management (DRM) systems are used extensively in many different industries, from pharmaceutical companies, oil and gas companies, automotive companies and in the design of electronics at electronic design automation companies. Distributed Resource Management is critical to the competitiveness of these organizations. Many of these companies use Univa Grid Engine, a DRM software to make better products or deliver products to market earlier, resulting in measurable economic benefits such as faster time to market, less defects and warranty returns and safer and more reliable products. A major focus here at Univa is the continuous optimization of throughput and performance of applications, containers and services across all types of shared resources, on premise and in cloud infrastructures. With that goal in mind we benchmarked Univa Grid Engine against previous versions of Grid Engine to ensure that we are optimizing Grid Engine, reducing the overhead of the entire system and reducing the time to process workload through the cluster.

In this Technical Brief we compare Univa Grid Engine 8.5.0 against Grid Engine 6.2U5, the last Grid Engine version from Sun Microsystems. The results of our testing show that at a minimum Univa Grid Engine 8.5.0 is two times (2x) faster than Grid Engine 6.2U5 on many of the tests we performed. In the most difficult test Univa Grid Engine 8.5.0 is 9.5 times faster than Grid Engine 6.2U5. This means that under normal conditions the overhead added by Univa Grid Engine is much reduced which does result in measurable differences in responsiveness of the system and time to complete all types of workload. In summary, Univa has dramatically improved system performance and scalability over Grid Engine 6.2U5; and Univa continues to improve Univa Grid Engine delivering a faster, more scalable and responsive product for our customers.
